It is winter time, and chilly winds howl around the bleak high plateaus of Ladakh. As a result, the resident mammals enrobe a luxury cold-proof fleece. Goats, antelopes, yaks, camels and even the local dogs grow an undercoat of fine fibre under an outer coat on their bodies. This helps them survive a severe temperature of -40 degrees celsius (or even lower than this). The winds which carry biting crisp make it even more difficult to stand these conditions. But, as a result of the fine fleece growing on the animals, it is just them who do not need to care about shelter against the harsh conditions. While the undercoat of all the local animals is fine and warm, it is the fleece of the goat, called Pashm, which is the most famous.
Why is Pashm treasured and endeared around the world? We shall come to know in the later sections. But first, an introduction to the animals who dare to survive the conditions prevailing in Ladakh.
The local animals of Ladakh
Cashmere goats
The fine and soft fibres of the animals which they grow as an undercoat have been used for centuries by their herders for a number of functions. Species like goats, sheep, yaks, and oxen have been, hence, domesticated. This way, herders can reuse their undercoats for personal and commercial use. Unfortunately, even the animals who could not be domesticated, are slaughtered. This is because their undercoats are used too, as the temperatures demand more and more warmth. As such the Vicuna and Tibetan antelope are usually (unlawfully) killed, and their undercoats are rejoiced in.
The Luxury of Pashm (Cashmere wool)
Of all the animals, it is Cashmere, locally known as Pashm, that is the most famous. Pashm is considered the best amongst all of its counterparts. It is this wool, coming from the down of the Cashmere producing goat, that has been used to craft the world-famous Kashmiri shawls. For this reason, Cashmere is the most anticipated wool type, not just locally or on a national level, but across the globe.
The Cashmere producing goat is found over 15000 feet above sea level on a plateau called Changthang. For this reason, it is sometimes called the Changthangi goat. It is pre-eminent among the down-producing goats. This is because it's down being used to produce Kashmiri shawls or the Pashmina Shawls
The Owners of Pashm
Herder with Cashmere goats
The herdsmen of the Cashmere producing goats are called Changpa. These are nomadic pastoralists who are the local residents in Changthang. Their octagonal tents (called Robu), made from yak hair, are spread all over the rocky terrains and deserted flat surfaces of the region. For centuries now, Chagpa tribes have been living a harsh life in the cold high altitude landscapes. They live life rearing their animals, who supply them with basic essentials. For example, the Cashmere goats give them Pashm, which they trade for the production of Kashmiri shawls. The Changpas camp at the highest altitudes that range from 3000 to 4000 metres, and experience extreme temperatures. Winters here are as cold as -50 degrees C. Changpas migrate almost 4 times in a year, to areas which more or less share the same inhospitable conditions owing to climatic severity.
Ladakhi Changpa tribesmen have a small population and only about 10000 people are found residing over the plateaus. But the entire community is not homogenous. Changpa are divided into tribes which have their own individual leaders, and specific grazing areas. Around 15 such groups are found in Ladakh and the tribes have different sizes ranging from just 20 to 150. However, the way of life is almost the same for all the tribes and just a few aspects differ.
Life of the Changpa
No phones, No internet, No electricity and connectivity. Yet the Changpa tribe manages to survive and has been doing so for a millennium now. And it is just wild animals, howling winds and the most inhospitable conditions that they share space. This has made the tribesmen the most attentive to seasonal changes. They might not be informed through TV and the internet about the changes taking place as far as the climate is concerned. But their sharp mental capabilities do. It is through sensory intelligence that these locals discern shifting seasons. Be it owing to the direction of the winds that pass or the slight yellow colour that grass acquires, the Changpa has a direct connection with nature that gives them an intuition of moving or settling.
Pastoralism is the main occupation of the Changa tribes. But some amongst them also have undertaken agriculture as an activity. As such, they grow crops like potatoes and barley in the cultivable fields around. The livestock with them consist of Cashmere goats, yak and horses; all are essential to survive the conditions they live in. For them, rearing these animals & consuming and selling their produce (milk, hair, meat) is the only means of income. The Cashmere goat, however, is mainly reared for its fine hair and not for its meat. The tribe helps in the production of about 40000 kg of Pashm in a year.
The Changpa earn by trading Pashm with Kashmir. It is believed that till 1960, the main produce of Pashm came from western Tibet; Ladakh was just a passage to do so. But later, when borders between Tibet and India closed, Ladakh remained and still is the main supplier of Pashm to Kashmir.
More about the Tribes
Changpa is generally divided into two main groups. One is the nomadic group called Phalpa. This is the group which moves from one place to another in search of grasslands for their animals. Their possessions are only as much as the animals can carry. The other is the settled group called Fangpa. Both the groups live in octagonal tents called Robu, which have decent heating arrangements. The tents also have a chimney to let the smoke pass lest the tent fills with harmful smog. These groups are related to each other, despite having different lifestyles. Both speak a language which is a dialect of Tibetan and practice Tibetan Buddhism.
Due to a lack of educational institutions in the plateaus, Changpa used to send their children to the market area for studying. These children studied in Tibetan schools. But now, since times have changed much, the young ones have descended to Leh. In fact, some even move outside of Ladakh for proper education. This might be the first meaningful encounter of the students with the outside world.
Hard Work Pays Off - Making of Pashmina from Pashm
For the entire year, Changpas care about their animals, travel from region to region and bear the most unfriendly climatic conditions. The ultimate result is the growth of fine fleece on the body of the Pashm-producing goat. The goat grows this fleece in winters as a defence against unfavourable conditions. It covers the sensitive parts of the goat, making it endure the conditions in a smooth manner. This continues till the end of the Spring season, and that is when its moulting period starts.
Cashmere goat being combed gently
The moulting period starts in March, and that is when the goat starts losing much of the Pashm naturally. The same is collected by herders, who await the process for the entire year. Towards summer, the remaining fleece makes the goat pretty uneasy, as summer temperature plummets to over +40 degrees C. The goats, hence, start rubbing themselves against coarser surfaces and try to get rid of the hair by themselves. This isn't much possible, and herders themselves go into action. They gently comb off the fleece from the bodies of the goat using specialized combs and tools and set the goat free to roam around.
Hence the entire wool is now in possession of the tribesmen, which they trade with Kashmir. The reason for this trade arises due to the lack of infrastructure in Ladakh. There are no handlooms or artisans in Ladakh who can process the wool to make any finished product. But in Kashmir, the Pashm is converted to fabrics - which results in the making of Kashmiri Pashmina shawls, scarves, and wraps, in addition to furnishing articles and accessories.
On its arrival in Kashmir, Pashm hardly feels like itself; it is just a lump of muddy and dusty wool mass. The hair is mixed with dirt, animal wastes, vegetable wastes, coarse hairs from the goat's outer coat and more. To transform this greasy lump into a yarn of gossamer fineness, one needs immensely skilled hands and brains. And that is what Kashmiri artisans are known for, all over the world. Kashmiri spinners, weavers, dyers, washermen, and embroiderers, all have the ability to convert lumps of raw Pashm to breathtakingly beautiful Pashmina shawls that evoke a sense of luxury and opulence. And this has been there for the last centuries.
Artisan weaving Pashmina on handloom
Starting with the cleaning of raw Pashm, the womenfolk makes sure every single thread is cleaned. This thorough cleaning reveals a new woolstock, which is handspun by the women over a spinning wheel. The spinning wheel is such an uncomplicated invention, but what it does amazes the onlookers. The wheel converts unrecognizable wool masses to fine Cashmere yarn which measures as fine as 12 microns in diameter. This gossamer-thin yarn goes for hand weaving, which is done using traditional handloom. The handloom converts yarn to fabric. This is the way Pashm becomes Pashmina, be it Pashmina shawls, Pashmina Scarves, Pashmina wraps or another luxury furnishing that is required. This process takes a few days, or a few months to complete. For profusely embroidered shawls or the Kani shawls of Kashmir, 4 to 5 years are spent by artisans preparing just one shawl.
Trading of Pashm
The Pashmina fabric, handmade from Pashm, was always the most cherished fabric, whether in the form of a shoulder mantle, robe, turban or waistcoat. Whereas it all started in the cold arid region of Ladakh, it spread its wings to the bustling markets of Europe and other places. No one could possibly believe that a fibre growing on the bodies of goats, which are reared by nomadic herders in a place where only they could survive, could create such a furore in international markets. It was Ladakhi and then Kashmiri traders which brought this out-of-towner fabric to the world, that passed through the most unexplored routes to the most unexpected places in the world.
The shawls handcrafted from Pashm did inspire a number of copies in Europe, but none could get even close to real Pashmina shawls in quality, fineness and warmth. The only version that could get somewhat close to the original shawls was Paisley, which was manufactured in Scotland. But the aesthetic impression that the original pieces left were simply unmatched.
Sooner or later, Pashmina shawls fell victim to fake albeit superficially more attractive shawls, and European factories started mass production of the same. Owing to the time Pashmina shawls took to get manufactured, many Europeans actually switched to alternatives whose ownership was a matter of days and not years like the original shawls. But the true patrons never compromised on quality and purity, and actually waited for 4 years at times to get the real Pashmina. But this was a smaller portion of the vast population. Nevertheless, the real Pashmina shawls never lost a tad of their quality, charm and admiration.
Honouring the owners, makers and takers of Pashmina shawl

It wouldn't be wrong if we called the Nomadic herders of Ladakh the owners of Pashm, as it is the sheer courage, strength and adaptive power of their animals and their own selves that make Pashm possible for the commoners. We can honour their honesty by investing in the purest of Pashm products which they have facilitated for us. The other group of artisans that we owe the graceful Pashmina shawls to are the craftsmen who are responsible to convert raw Pashm into the fine fabric. Be it shawls, wraps, blankets, bed sheets, handkerchiefs or socks, it is just their painstaking efforts and the love for work that enables us to own luxury articles made from Pashm.
Last, but not at all least, a big shout out to the real patrons of the Pashmina shawl, whose admiration and love make it possible for the makers to continue being associated with the craft, and introduce modern designs into the same. Was it not for their love for this art form, and their continuous quest for pure and original Pashmina shawls, the art would have disappeared long back from the valley? Hence, credit goes to your support for the art and the artisans of the same.
We are so excited about this new shopped stuff, but as soon as we use these ‘in-vogue apparel’ or the most ‘trendy accessories’, they wither in just a few months. How utterly disappointing is the fact that clothes do not last, as long as we want them to. Either they become withered within a few months or look immensely shaggy. Where did the old times go when clothing, wraps and accessories lasted for years together? How quickly did slow fashion disappear and pave the way for fast fashion where nothing lasts more than a few weeks? Is there anything in the present times which lasts for a lifetime? There is. Cashmere.
Cashmere lasts for a lifetime. For more than 20 years. For a time we never expected. And it ages like fine wine. It looks graceful when fresh, and heirloom and vintage when old. But why do we not know everything about this exquisite wool type? What is Cashmere, and what is so special about it? Let's find out
What is Cashmere?
Cashmere is the anglicization of the word Kashmir. And Kashmir is a place in North India. What is special about the valley is the production of apparel, wraps, scarves and accessories that have been made out of Cashmere.
Capra Hircus goats in Ladakh
Cashmere is a fine animal hair, which grows on the body of Capra Hircus goats. This goat is special because it produces this luxury wool - which is one of the most precious and luxurious animal hairs in the world. This species of goat is found roaming and residing around the Himalayan ranges, and as such many countries produce Cashmere. China and Mongolia are the top producers of this precious wool type. The best quality Cashmere, however, comes from Ladakh. The Ladakhi Capra Hircus goat is the most prized one because the hair it grows is the finest, warmest, softest and the most luxurious too. Ladakhi Cashmere, as such, is considered as the most special quality of this soft gold.
The Changthang area of Ladakh houses the goat of Ladakh. The goat grows fine wool in winter, which it uses as a defence against the harsh winters in the area. But as soon as Spring - its moulting season - arrives, the goat starts shedding the hair naturally. Some portion, which is hard to lose naturally, is combed off by herders using specialised combs. The wool is packed in small packets post a basic cleaning.
Processing Cashmere
The word ‘Cashmere’ comes from ‘Kashmir’ because of its processing, which is done in the Kashmir valley. The valley houses artisans, who have decades of experience in processing. There are hundreds of spinners (women), weavers, embroidery artisans, dyers, cleaners, and more artisans associated with processing. As such, the valley is rich in Cashmere production, especially in the making of Pashmina shawls, which has been the obsession of queens and kings for centuries. Even now, Kashmiri Pashmina shawls have a record of stealing shows sponsored by the biggest brands and belonging to the most famous designers around the world.
How is wool processed into scarves?
Cashmere processing starts with cleaning it again by womenfolk of the valley, who make it seem like the easiest of tasks due to their experience. Post cleaning, raw wool is sent for spinning. Spinning is done on a wooden spinning wheel, to which lumps of wool are attached, and spun with the coordination of the wheel and hand. The coordination is perfect enough to transform lumps of wool to fine fibre of diameter 12 to 16 microns only. The fibre is packed and sent to weavers, who are usually men. The processing is a family affair, and hence, at times, members of the same family perform different activities.
Artisan weaving on Hand Loom
Post Spinning, the fibre needs to be woven. This is done over a handloom, which is again a wooden structure, operated by one or two men. This handloom is centuries old, and Cashmere weaving has been done over these looms for centuries. One or two men fix the fibre over the top of this handloom and start weaving it in sync. This process takes 3 or 4 days for plain Cashmere fabric (or several years if it is a Kani shawl). This is the birth of Cashmere shawls, scarves, wraps, and more.
Cashmere and slow-fashion

While the world knows very few patrons of slow fashion, Cashmere remains one of the biggest representative cases of the same. While some scarves or shawls take a few days to complete, others take a few years, being the perfect example of slow fashion trends. Cashmere scarves and shawls are timeless fashion accessories, and fortunately they age exactly like they are made - Slowly. A Pashmina shawl, made from Ladakhi Cashmere is believed to last for 30 years. In Fact it acquired a vintage, an heirloom look as it ages. A Pashmina shawl made from Cashmere never looks old and withered but ages gracefully. As a matter of fact, women in Kashmir gifted their own Pashmina shawls to their newly wed daughters as souvenirs of their culture.
Your Cashmere shawl will age gracefully and last for the longest time, only if you take care of it the way it deserves and demands. Cashmere fibre is gentle and hence requires gentle treatment. This includes washing your shawl gently with your hands, using a Cashmere shampoo. Then rinse it with your hands too with gentle movements. Drying a Cashmere is done by rolling it in between two clean and dry towels, and later air drying it. If the shawl needs ironing, it is done by a steam iron.
Storing a Cashmere scarf or shawl needs more caution. The place should be dry, clean and away from direct sunlight. It should be free from moisture and hence moths that can damage its delicate fibre. Cashmere should be worn carefully, and should be prevented from much friction. Friction can cause pilling, and piling can make a new shawl withered.
One should always invest in pure Cashmere scarves, wraps or shawl. Buying these precious things from authentic sellers is a must. This way your shawl will be your companion for an entire lifetime.
