Over 14000 feet above sea level, in the harshest of climates, resides a goat, rare and unique. This special breed of goat grows a fine and soft undercoat, which protects it from this harsh climate - the times when temperature scales go down to -40 degrees C. This wool is cherished all over the world, and herders, hence wait for springtime, as they can't wait to procure it. As soon as Spring arrives, and the wool makes the goat uncomfortable, herders use specialized combs to comb it off. This heavenly fine wool is Cashmere. It is later processed to craft luxury wraps, apparel blankets, and more.

Origin of Cashmere

It was the 14th century when a saint from Persia visited the valley of Kashmir. It was he who discovered this fine wool for the first time growing on the goat. Seeing its fine texture and immense smoothness, the saint immediately presented socks made from it to the then king. The king immediately ordered processing units of the same to be started, and hence, Cashmere started being processed in Kashmir. It was transformed into beautiful shawls, scarves, and wraps, which were cherished all over the world.

The word Cashmere is an anglicization of the word ‘Kashmir’ and has been coined by the British.

Making luxury Fabric

Cashmere has several types. And the types depend on the making. Hence if we know the making of a Cashmere wrap or scarf, we will understand the types well.

pashmina goat
Changthangi goat in Ladakh

The making of this luxury fabric starts from the terrains of Ladakh, where the rare and unique Changthangi goat resides. In the harsh winters of Ladakh, the goat grows a fine and soft fleece as a defense mechanism. This wool is lost naturally by the goat as seasons change. Hot weather brings about a hormonal change in the goat’s body and it rubs its body against coarse surfaces to get rid of the hair. This hair is collected by its herders and packed to be sent for processing.

Processing:

weaving cashmere
Weaving cashmere on handloom

The processing of Cashmere starts in Spring when the packets are opened and wool is acquired. This wool is spun by womenfolk, who spin it with their hands and a spinning wheel. The rough wool gets transformed into fine threads by spinning it. Spun threads are mounted onto handlooms, where these are woven into fabrics. These fabrics can be shawls, scarves, wraps, or just solid fabric.

Types of Cashmere

The types of Cashmere depend upon the making. On the basis of thread fineness, ply, and weave, Cashmere is divided into categories.

Fineness

Cashmere is often graded A, B, and C and this depends upon how pure and how fine the thread is when processed.

The best type of Cashmere has graded A type where the fine thread is just 12 to 16 microns in diameter. This type of Cashmere is entirely handmade, and there is no interference from machines. The next type is type B or Grade B where the thread is thicker than Grade A type of Cashmere. This is around 20 microns, and hence products made from this thread are thicker. The last grade is grade C Cashmere, where the micron count is 25 or even 30. This is used to make sweaters usually as wraps or shawls of this kind that are thick like wool.

Ply

Ply is the count of Cashmere threads that are twisted together to create the threads that will be used to weave a fabric. One-ply is hence thinner as just one thread is used to weave fabric. This fabric is thinner and more elastic, as well as less warm than others. Two-ply Cashmere is the one when two threads are twisted together to weave a fabric. These are thicker than one play and thinner than three-ply ones which are thick and heavy

Weave

The loose weave of Cashmere threads results in finer and more sensitive Cashmere fabric. This is prone to cuts and tears as it is the least sturdy. Tight weave fabric, on the contrary, is tightly woven, and threads lie close to each other. As a result, the fabric is more sturdy, thick, and warm.

What is the best type of Cashmere?

The best type, as far as this luxury wool kind is concerned, is the one which is the purest in its acquisition and making. Purest threads of Cashmere acquired from Ladakh should be hand spun and handwoven. This results in the making of the best type of Cashmere. It is lightweight, warm, and immensely graceful. Ladakhi Cashmere is considered the best variety, as this is just 12 to 16 microns thick.

The type of Cashmere also depends on the user's choice. Some like their shawls and wraps thick, and hence deliberately opt for a machine-spun scarf or wrap. On the contrary, others keep it natural and simple and choose handmade yet delicate beauties to adorn their winter apparel.

Which is the best amongst Cashmere types?

We have already learnt about the many types of Cashmere that the Himalayas produce. Amongst all these Cashmere types, it is the Ladakhi Cashmere that wins the race. Ladakhi Cashmere is produced by a goat species that is locally known as the Changthangi goat, owing to its homeplace being Changthang.

Why is Ladakhi Cashmere so special?

Ladakhi Cashmere grows as a downfibre over the body of the Ladakhi goat. The goat survives a harsh temperature (which goes down to -40 degree Celsius), and nature blesses it with the Cashmere wool for protection. This way, the entire winter season becomes bearable for the goat. As soon as summer season arrives, the goat experiences certain hormonal changes and starts to lose the same wool. A part is naturally lost and the remaining portion is gently combed by the herders. This is collected and processing of this fine wool starts.

Processing Ladakhi Cashmere

Processing Cashmere that comes from Ladakh is a meticulous task and pretty painstaking too. for this reason the best of the best craftsmen are chosen. Kashmiri craftsmen have excelled the art of transforming raw Cashmere wool to fabric. This has been so from centuries together.

Kashmiri artisans clean Cashmere thoroughly as soon as it arrives. To start with, it is handed over to women who clean it thread by thread and this process takes days together, sometimes weeks. Cleaned Cashmere is spun by women over traditional spinning wheels and this process transforms Cashmere wool lumps to the finest threads. These threads are handwoven over hand looms, and a fabric comes into existence. The fabric can be shawls, scarves, wraps, or simply fabric. Cashmere fabric can be further processed to make apparel and accessories.

Where does Cashmere clothing come from?

Since the 15th century, it is Kashmiri Cashmere that has gotten all love and desirability from around the world. From Europeans Nobles to local Indian rulers to even commoners who could afford this luxury, it was Kashmiri Cashmere that stole hearts. Cashmere clothing, which comes from Ladakhi Cashmere had made royals swoon over it. Here are a number of reasons why Ladakhi Cashmere (processed in Kashmir) is considered the best.

  1. Ladakhi Cashmere is the softest of all. Hence apparel or wraps made from it are never itchy and can be worn even by those who have the most sensitive skin.
  2. Ladakhi Cashmere is the warmest of all Cashmere types. Cashmere clothing which comes from Ladakhi Cashmere is so warm that one barely needs a sweater of cardigan when wearing it. The second best in line is the Mongolian Cashmere.
  3. Cashmere that comes from Ladakh and is processed in Kashmir is always processed manually. There is no interference of machines which makes Ladakhi Cashmere products sustainable. (Sustainability of Ladakhi Cashmere products comes from other factors too. Manual processing is just one of those).
  4. Ladakhi Cashmere is the finest of all. Owing to its fineness, Wraps made from it are lightweight and hence easy to carry around. This feathery light weight makes Cashmere wraps and apparel ideal when travelling to colder regions.
  5. Kashmiri Cashmere has a royal reputation. It was the Kashmiri Cashmere shawl that was gifted by Emperor Napoleon to his wife Empress Josephine. The empress, who was fashionista of those times, loved the shawl so much that she placed an order for a few hundred shawls in her lifetime. It is believed it was the Kani Pashmina shawl, made from Ladakhi Cashmere.

Concluding

We are absolutely in love with Ladakhi Cashmere products. These have a different and unique charm when it comes to appearance. As far as their feel is concerned, these are the softest, most warm and the most comfortable pieces. Cashmere shawls are lightweight, yet the most cozy accessories all over the world.

When it comes to Cashmere types that are produced in the world, our fabric experts always recommend Ladakhi Cashmere which is processed in Kashmir. This is because Kashmiri artisans have decades old knowhow and a vast experience of processing raw Cashmere to unbelievably fine fabric. These artists of the art have been involved through generations and are even now fighting to keep Cashmere shawl making alive and thriving.

Even though Cashmere scarves are one of the most sought-after fabrics in the world, they need proper care and careful handling. Be it their use, wearing, washing, drying, or storage, Cashmere scarves need full attention and care. While owners of Cashmere ask us hundreds of questions about the management of their Cashmere scarf, the most common of these is about washing Cashmere. And post washing, if the owner’s Cashmere scarf shrinks, then that becomes another story.

Shrinking of Cashmere is often a big issue, and because owners do not know what to do with a shrunk scarf, they lose all hope of wearing it in the future.

Does Cashmere Scarf Shrink?

When Cashmere scarves aren't washed the way they should be, it leads to a number of harm caused to the fabric. Cashmere is exceptionally gentle and delicate and demands the same treatment. If not treated carefully, it might lead to bobbling, pilling, tearing, or shrinking of the precious piece. Hence, one should have proper information and knowledge about how to deal with a Cashmere scarf. In fact, before buying a Cashmere scarf, one should gain information on its care, wash, wear and storage.

How to Wash Cashmere?

To avoid shrinking, or for that matter any harm to the Cashmere scarf, one has to wash the scarf in the most gentle way. Here are the steps to wash Cashmere scarves like they deserve to be washed:

cashmere wash
Washing cashmere

Step 1: Fill a tub with lukewarm water. Make sure the water is not hot. The most common reason that Cashmere scarves shrink is the use of hot water.

Step 2: Pour Cashmere shampoo into it. You can even use mild baby shampoo if Cashmere shampoo is not available

Step 3: Soak the cashmere scarf in this mixture for 30 minutes. Make sure the entire base gets fully immersed in it.

Step 4: After 30 minutes, take the scarf out, and squeeze it by placing it in between your hands. Do not Wring the scarf

Step 5: Rinse the scarf with cold clean water and squeeze between your hands again and again till the water runs clear. Your Cashmere scarf is clean now.

Step 6: Be extremely gentle with your scarf during the washing process, make sure you do not rub the scarf harshly as Cashmere can tear easily with your hands.

How to Dry Cashmere Scarf?

Post washing, it is time to dry the scarf. It is again time-consuming and fairly difficult. Follow the steps to dry your scarf:

Cashmere Care
Drying cashmere

Firstly: As soon as you wash the Cashmere scarf, bring it out in fresh air to dry. Make sure direct sunlight doesn't fall on the place.

Secondly: Lay a clean dry towel flat on the ground. Place the scarf flat on this towel. Cover these with another clean and dry towel

Thirdly: Roll all the three layers together, so that the excess water is soaked by the towels, and the scarf becomes fairly dry.

Fourthly: Remove the two towels and again lay the scarf flat on the ground on a clean towel or any clean fabric.

Fifthly: Always remember not to hang a washed Cashmere scarf. It can lose its shape and become deformed. Also, never leave your scarf in direct sunlight as that may harm the fibre of the scarf.

Lastly: Do not tumble dry Cashmere as that may cause pilling. Always make sure you air dry your scarf. This ensures long life and a beautiful appearance of the same.

How to Store Cashmere?

One of the most neglected, yet crucial steps in caring for your delicate scarf is storing it. The way you store your Cashmere scarf in the present season shows on the scarf in the next season. Here are the steps to follow for a longer life of your precious asset:

Step 1: Find a cool, dry, and moisture free place to store your scarf

Step 2: Wrap the scarf in a muslin cloth and not a plastic bag. Plastic causes moisture and becomes a breeding ground for moths. Muslin keeps the scarf dry.

Step 3: Place your scarf in a separate place. If you suspect moths can still attack the scarf, place moth balls around.

Step 4: If you are the proud owner of a number of these luxury scarves, do not store them in a pile over each other, without any separating layer. This can cause pilling.

What makes a Cashmere scarf shrink?

Irresponsible handling of your precious scarf leads to its shrinking, pilling, tearing, and many other harms. Shrinking is usually caused by heat. Washing your scarf in hot water, or in a washing machine with a hot cycle, tumble drying it, ironing it directly, or using low-quality detergent to wash it are some reasons why your scarf shrinks. However, there are a few easy ways in which you can unshrink your scarf.

How to Unshrink Cashmere scarf?

wash cashmere
Unshrink your cashmere

To unshrink a shrunken Cashmere scarf, there is a trick that may or may not work with your scarf, depending on the severity of the shrinkage. Fill a tub with lukewarm water, and some hair conditioner. Soak the scarf for just 10 minutes into this concoction. Rinse it properly after the stipulated time, and lay it flat on a towel. Stretch the sides of the scarf gently to their original width or length. Now let it dry naturally in the air.

This trick will help Cashmere retain its original shape and size. But make sure you carry this process out gently, as these scarves are gentle babies, and can sometimes rip if your treatment is harsh.

Now we know that a properly cared for Cashmere scarf retains the signature softness of this miracle material. This way the scarf can last for a lifetime, as much as 30 years!

A lot expensive, unique, and super comfy - Cashmere is one of the fabrics which has possessed royal admiration for centuries. But why is the fibre such a prized one, and why do Cashmere wrap stay with one for a lifetime? And if it is animal wool, why doesn't it feel itchy on the skin? Let's find out!

Q&A about Cashmere

To know everything about Cashmere, a few patrons asked us a number of questions. We include all of those in this write-up to provide you with the deepest knowledge about the origins and roots of Cashmere. Moreover, we try to make things as easy as possible for you

Q1: Where does Cashmere come from?

cashmere goat
Cashmere goats in Ladakh

Cashmere comes from the Himalayas, where the rare Cashmere goats are found scattered in different regions. Owing to this, Cashmere producing regions are Mongolia, China, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. The finest Cashmere is produced by the Ladakhi goat, found in North India. It is the area of Changthang, which has a freezing temperature of -40 degrees C, where the goat resides. Since the temperatures are freezing in winters, nature blesses the goat with Cashmere, which is warm enough to keep it safe and comfortable all the cold season long.

Come Spring, the warmth of Cashmere makes the goat uncomfortable. As a result, it rubs its body against coarse surfaces and gets rid of some portion of the same. The left-out wool is professionally combed off gently, using specialized combs and tools. All of this is packed in small packets and processed manually.

Q2: How is Cashmere processed to make Cashmere wrap?

Raw cashmere fibre
Raw cashmere fibre

As soon as raw Cashmere is acquired, it is first cleaned thoroughly to get rid of any waste. Post cleaning, lumps of wool are sent for spinning to transform them into long threads. These threads are just 12 to 16 microns in diameter. Owing to this fineness of the thread, Cashmere becomes soft and smooth, and products made from it become pricey.

Post spinning, the threads are handwoven to transform threads into the fabric. This fabric can be Cashmere wraps, scarves, or mufflers. Later these products can be embellished in embroidery, prints, patterns, or laces.

Cashmere products have some crimp to them, which helps them trap air, making them insulating and lightweight. As a result, they become one of the most loved and cherished products all over the world.

Q3: How much Cashmere is produced by a goat?

A Cashmere goat produces a meagre 150 grams of wool per season. This is not enough to make wraps or scarves. Hence wool from 3 to 4 goats is acquired and processed to make one large shawl or scarf. This is the reason why Cashmere garments are exclusive and expensive.

A large Cashmere wrap is around 450 to 500 grams. This lightweight Cashmere owes to the fineness of the fibre produced by the Cashmere goats, and this again leads to its admiration not only among women but men too.

Q4: How to wash Cashmere wrap?

Cashmere wash

Washing Cashmere is a bit of a challenge as one has to be really careful, lest this fine and the gentle fabric gets damaged. Handwashing is the best option to wash a Cashmere wrap, scarf, or sweater. Simply soaking your Cashmere in a mix of lukewarm water and Cashmere soap for 30 minutes will do. Subsequently, rinse your Cashmere in your hands with cold water, and let it air dry, flat on the ground. Do not hang, do not keep in direct sunlight, and do not be harsh in any way.

Q5: How to store Cashmere wrap?

Storing Cashmere too is a task. But if stored properly a Cashmere wrap or garment can last for a lifetime. The first thing to do is find a cool and dry place, which is totally moisture free and away from direct sunlight. Thereafter, wrap the cashmere in a muslin cloth and not in plastic which causes moisture. Place this wrapped Cashmere on the clean, dry shelf, and you are done.

Q6: Is Cashmere wool Itchy?

Not at all. Cashmere is the least itchy wool type that you will ever encounter. Apart from those who are allergic to every natural hair type, Cashmere is safe for all and exceptionally cozy on the skin.

Q7: Can Cashmere wraps stretch?

With everyday use or improper handling, yes, Cashmere wraps or scarves can stretch. At times, the owners of a Cashmere wrap dry this gentle accessory by wringing it, hanging it wet, or ironing it directly. A Cashmere wrap or garment, on the contrary, needs extremely gentle handling. It has to be air-dried by placing it flat on the ground and letting it dry on its own.

If, by chance, your Cashmere wrap has been stretched much, place it in cold water, reshape it, and now air dry it flat. This will help the wrap retain its original shape. Take proper future care of this precious belonging.

Q8: Is Cashmere warmer than Wool?

Cashmere is animal hair acquired from the Cashmere goats which live in the high plateaus of the Himalayas. Wool is acquired from sheep. Both are the very first choices of customers, as soon as winters arrive. But women, living in colder regions, prefer Cashmere, as it is believed to be 8 times warmer than sheep wool. Moreover, Cashmere is lightweight and softer when compared to sheep wool, and is hence easy to carry and style.

To be able to reap all the benefits of Cashmere, one has to make sure that an investment in Pure Cashmere is being made. The warmth, the timelessness, the long life, softness, grace, and smoothness, all belong to pure Cashmere, and not a fake one. At times, sellers mix nylon threads or silk threads with pure Cashmere threads. These kinds of wraps or garments do not last long and are not as warm as pure Cashmere. Hence one should always invest in Pure Cashmere and shop from authentic sellers.

That is all we have for now about Cashmere - one of the most precious luxuries developed by Changthangi goats and cherished by royals. Proper care of this asset will make sure you enjoy its warm cuddles and baby soft caress for years to come.

Why Celebrities Choose Cashmere Wrap?

Cashmere is the Finest and Richest Fabric in the world

Celebs always look for the labels, the luxuries, the best in fashion. And Cashmere being the finest and most expensive fabric in the world, who wouldn’t want to flaunt one? Besides, it is stylish, comforting and a symbol of class.

Cashmere is natural fabric

If you’ve been following any celebs lately, you’ll have noticed a new trend they are now shifting their focus on. They are using the power of their influence to address issues gripping society. Go green and go natural are among them.

Cashmere wraps serve this purpose as well. Cashmere is a natural fabric, made from the hair of Capra Hiracus, also called Changthangi goat.

The processing of Cashmere right from harvesting the wool to creating a finished product does not see any machine intervention. Neither does it involve any poly-fibre. Locals harvest it, Kashmiri women hand spin it over a wooden spindle. Later it is handwoven by a weaver over a traditional handloom.

Even dyeing a Cashmere does not involve any harmful chemicals. It does not cause any harm to the environment or to your skin. Hence it makes a perfect accessory for a celeb who is endorsing natural themes.

Cashmere makes the perfect choice for them because it blends vogue, comfort, and warmth in its carefully handwoven folds. In fact, Cashmere is the warmest and finest of all fabrics the world has ever known. What’s more, while other fabrics keep you warm at the cost of profuse sweat, Cashmere doesn’t. It comes with natural air pockets which insulate you from bitter cold while keeping you sweat-free and being handwoven makes it breathable enough to keep sweat and body odour at bay!

Cashmere is a universe of different styles and colours

Today, there is a Cashmere for every occasion, every mood, and every personality. So it becomes the go-to accessory for celebs.

Nothing compares to the feel of Cashmere

There are plenty of soft fabrics out there, but none of them matches the feel of a pure handmade Cashmere. You can try it for yourself-pass your hands over merino, camel, and lambswool and then pass them over Cashmere. You’ll know the difference. Celebrities choose the best for themselves that's what makes people look up to them. So when they compare, they find the feel of Cashmere to be nonpareil.

Cashmere doesn’t cause any allergies

Celebs are humans too. They get to wear so many different fabrics every week that their skin often feels irritated. Cashmere is one fabric that guarantees no allergies & no skin irritations. It is free from the harshness of chemicals, synthetic fibres and what not. It is unadulterated and its process has been preserved by the keepers of the loom. Even the molecular structure of Cashmere is such that it doesn’t allow any particles and residue to stick or breed.

Cashmere lasts a lifetime

A Cashmere wrap is a celebrity’s best friend as it stays with them for a lifetime. Fads come and go, the vogue of Cashmere never dies. It's a timeless accessory that is as relevant today as it was 7 centuries ago when it was first made. And while other accessories last for a year or two, Cashmere lasts forever. It has a long long life. If you take good care of it-it may even last for a century.

Back in the Kashmir valley, Cashmere wrap passes on from one generation to the next. This continues for about 60 to 70 years! So while other trends die out, a Cashmere lasts forever (if you take good care of it).

It helps celebs be the head-turners wherever they go!
