• The first step involves its cleaning which takes around a week. As the fibre is extremely thin, removing foreign material from it is cumbersome and time-consuming. 

• Clean and pure wool is mounted onto a wooden wheel (locally called yinder) where it gets spun into yarn. It is again exceptionally meticulous to spin Cashmere, as the fibre is 12-16 microns in diameter. Womenfolk carry this process out for 8-10 hours together.

• This fine yarn is mounted on a handloom which is mostly manual to work over. This also takes 4-5 days and hence a plain shawl is produced. Weavers too sit for 8-10 hours a day weaving the shawl. It takes masterly skill to weave Cashmere, as one cut in the fibre means replacing it completely.

• If the need arises for embroidery, a Pashmina shawl is hand embroidered. Sometimes embroidery takes 4-5 years to complete. The motifs of these embroidery types are labyrinthine and exceptionally beautiful.

• It should be noted that it takes the wool of 3 Ladakhi goats to make one full shawl that is so smooth and soft that it passes through a finger ring.

Why do Cashmere scarves shed?

Unfortunately, shedding is the basic nature of wool and cashmere. It's unlikely that you'll shut down the shedding process completely, but yes, you can keep it controlled. Wool or Cashmere have protein fibre from animals and hence shed necessarily. However, there are certain tricks to keep your Cashmere scarf from shedding, or at the least keep it controlled and reduced. 

How do I stop my cashmere scarf from shedding?

To help keep your Cashmere scarf protected from shedding, you should fold up your scarf and place it safely in a ziplock bag. This bag should be placed in the freezer for at least 24 hours. This method will control the shedding problem, and you can wear the scarf afresh.

This method does not help stop the shedding once and for all. It will just help control the same for some time. Animal fibre scarves or outfits will be shed again and again, as this is an innate nature of natural fibres. 

Shedding vs Pilling

Shedding certainly does not mean pilling, and pilling should not be taken as the shedding of Cashmere scarves. Even though both of these problems are the most common when it comes to Cashmere, they aren't the same. Pilling and shedding both occur when Cashmere comes in contact with other surfaces. 

Bobbling, also known as pilling, refers to the process which takes place when fabric brushes against a surface and releases fibres that migrate to the fabric's surface. This forms tiny fibre balls which remain on the surface attached to it. Shedding, on the other hand, is the fibre being pulled directly from the fabric and captured by the surface that was brushed against it. The other surface will carry the fabric on itself.

It is illegal to procure or craft Shahtoosh because it is not ethical to use the wool of an endangered species. Herders trap it forcefully and kill it and then skin the hair from its underbelly. When the popularity of Pashmina rose to its zenith in the 19th century, many fraudulent traders invested in making cheap Pashmina shawls. These shawls were either machine woven, or there was silk or nylon mixed into them during the process of weaving. The one-third category was those shawls which were made from sheep wool, then treated with softening chemicals and sold as Pashmina shawls. Similarly, there was a very famous category of an impure Pashmina shawl, which were called Faux Pashminas. These were the most well-known, and most of the customers still ask sellers for faux Pashminas. We will come to these later in detail. 

Innocent customers purchase any type of fake shawls, considering them to be pure Pashmina pieces, but unfortunately, after a few uses, the shawls withered. On top of that, there was no one to listen to their complaints, as the sellers wouldn't be available for that.  

This led to a downfall in the making of pure Pashmina wraps as cheap copies were sold for less. Hence customers got lured toward them. But when these fakes didn't meet their expectations, they doubted the entire Pashmina industry. As a result, the art of making pure Pashminas suffered, as well as did their makers. 

Purity of Pashmina shawls

A pure Pashmina shawl would be such a shawl which is made from 100% Cashmere only. No foreign strengthening material would be used in it.

After the advent of power looms, Cashmere would be mixed with strengthening nylon or silk to make it eligible for the wear and tear of the machine. This fabric, hence, would be an amalgam of a number of materials and not pure. A Pure Pashmina shawl is made from 100% pure Cashmere, which is handmade and there is no interference from the machine.

What is a Faux Pashmina?

A large number of fake Pashmina shawls saw the rise of Faux Pashminas. Faux Pashmina shawls are nothing, but an amalgam of Cashmere and any synthetic fibre like viscose. These shawls are super soft and smooth to touch, but surely not as warm as pure Pashmina shawls. These were invented in the 18th and 19th centuries when traders wanted to cheat customers. However, a category of customers themselves asks for Faux Pashmina shawls, either because they cannot afford pure Pashmina or they do not have a problem even if their Pashmina is fake.

The Burn Test

Pick a fringe of your shawl and burn it. If it gives out the odour of burnt hair, there are high chances that the shawl is pure and original. This is because Cashmere is natural hair and will give out the same odour if burnt:

A Matte texture

If this burnt part had a matte texture, and its remains turned powdery, the chances of this shawl being pure are high.

An Irregular weave

Hold your Pashmina shawl against a light source. Does the weave seem irregular? If it does, you are holding a pure, handmade shawl and not a machine-made one. That is because regular weaves are made by the power loom. The hands of a human can't make perfect weaves. 

A Shiny Appearance

If your Pashmina has a shiny or glittery appearance, chances are that it is a mixed one. There might be silk or nylon threads mixed into Cashmere yarn during the weaving process. Pure Pashmina shawl will have a matte appearance. 

Laboratory Test Results

If you know of a Pashmina testing lab, you can easily get your shawl tested. They will check the micron count of its threads. If it is in the same range as is that of Cashmere, your shawl is pure.
